The Tekel Building constitutes an important component of Düzce’s industrial and social memory and represents a period in which production facilities played a central role in shaping the city’s urban identity. Constructed in the early years of the Republic within the framework of the state monopoly system for tobacco and alcohol production, the building functioned not only as an industrial facility but also as a catalyst for economic activity and everyday urban life. Designed by Rebii Gorbon, the building later lost its original function, was subsequently used for educational purposes, and was eventually demolished.
Within the scope of this project, the Tekel Building has been digitally reconstructed through AI-assisted, image-based 3D modeling using available archival photographs and visual traces. Rather than aiming for a complete historical reconstruction, the model offers an interpretive spatial representation intended to reintroduce the building’s massing, form, and urban presence. By placing the digital model at its original location via web-based augmented reality, the project seeks to make this layer of industrial heritage experientially accessible and to reconnect it with Düzce’s contemporary urban memory.
The Düzce Clock Tower is among the structures that held an important place in the city's early settlement fabric, but which have not survived to the present day. Information about the period in which it existed is limited; all physical traces of the structure have completely disappeared, and only archival photographs and oral accounts have survived to the present.
Within the scope of LabMemory, this project aims to recreate the Clock Tower in three dimensions using AI-powered methods from existing photographs and to allow for a digital experience of the structure. While creating a reconstruction that closely resembles the building's original appearance, detail enhancement, perspective analysis, and modeling processes are applied to the photographs.
This study contributes to making visible again a lost structure in Düzce's urban memory, and also constitutes an important prototype for testing methods developed for digital cultural heritage production.
